About Dr. Maya Klein

I am a clinical psychologist and certified psychoanalyst, licensed in California, Oregon, and Idaho. For more than twenty years, I have worked with adults, adolescents, and children whose emotional lives are complex—people facing anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, and longstanding patterns that are hard to understand or shift.

This work is well suited for people seeking something deeper and more thoughtful than short-term therapy can offer. They are looking for a clinician who takes their internal experience seriously and works with care and precision. My practice is grounded in psychoanalytic training and a commitment to helping people understand the emotional and developmental forces that shape their inner world and their relationships.

This is deliberate, in-depth psychological work aimed at helping people live with greater clarity, steadiness, and direction.

My Approach

My approach is rooted in psychoanalysis, a rigorous and developmentally informed method for understanding emotional life. Psychoanalysis attends to how early experiences, internal conflicts, and relational patterns shape a person’s inner world over time—often outside of conscious awareness.

Rather than focusing on symptom management alone, this approach seeks to understand why difficulties arise and why certain patterns persist. Psychoanalytic work offers a structured framework for making sense of emotional experience and for addressing psychological conflicts at their roots.

Background & Clinical Experience

I hold dual Ph.D. degrees in Clinical and Industrial–Organizational Psychology and completed postdoctoral training in both Child and Adult Psychoanalysis at the San Diego Psychoanalytic Center. I have been in private practice for over fifteen years and also teach and supervise through the Oregon Psychoanalytic Center and the Department of Psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University.

Earlier in my career, I worked in clinical, educational, and medical settings where psychological complexity was central to the work. This included serving as Lead Clinician in an intensive outpatient eating-disorder program, developing treatment approaches for veterans and others affected by severe trauma, and conducting comprehensive psychological and neuropsychological evaluations. These experiences continue to inform the depth, rigor, and steadiness I bring to treatment.
