About Dr. Maya B. Klein

I am a clinical psychologist and certified psychoanalyst, licensed in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and California. I provide psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic therapy, and consultation for adults, adolescents, and children, specializing in the treatment of anxiety, depression, trauma, and complex relational difficulties. My work is depth-oriented and developmentally informed, aimed at those seeking lasting change and a deeper understanding of themselves.

A Depth-Oriented, Psychoanalytic Perspective

Many individuals come to me after trying short-term or symptom-focused therapies that did not result in lasting change. They may be outwardly high-functioning yet feel stuck, disconnected, or caught in patterns they cannot fully explain. My practice focuses on uncovering the unconscious conflicts and formative experiences that shape emotional life, behavior, and relationships, with the goal of fostering meaningful psychological growth.

Background and Training

I hold dual Ph.D. degrees in Clinical Psychology and Industrial-Organizational Psychology and am a certified psychoanalyst, with my primary work devoted to providing in-depth psychoanalytic treatment for adults, adolescents, and children. Alongside my clinical practice, I have extensive experience across clinical, educational, and medical settings, including serving as Lead Clinician for an intensive outpatient eating disorder program; establishing treatment protocols for veterans and others affected by combat and severe trauma; and conducting comprehensive psychological and neuropsychological evaluations for diagnostic clarification—including traumatic brain injuries, autism, ADHD, and personality disorders. I completed my post-doctoral training in both Child and Adult Psychoanalysis at the San Diego Psychoanalytic Center.

Teaching, Supervision, and Publications

In addition to my full-time psychoanalytic practice, I provide consultation and supervision to other clinicians, contributing to the development of advanced therapeutic skill and psychoanalytic thinking. I serve on faculty at the Oregon Psychoanalytic Center and as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Oregon Health & Science University. I have also worked as an executive coach at the Center for Creative Leadership, advising professionals and teams on leadership, performance, and interpersonal effectiveness.

My research and writing have appeared in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Prevention and Intervention in the Community and the Australian Journal of Community Psychology. I have also been featured in other media, such as the San Diego Tribune and KUSI-San Diego, where I’ve provided expert commentary on mental health and development.

How I Work

Effective treatment requires rigor, reliability, and sustained attention to the inner life. My work goes beyond symptom relief, focusing instead on uncovering the unconscious conflicts and formative experiences that shape emotional life, behavior, and relationships.
